The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel has officially flagged off the Akwa Ibom Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project – NEWMAP, at Etim Umana gully erosion site in Uyo, with a promise to see it through its completion.
Governor Udom Emmanuel who was represented by his deputy, Moses Ekpo, said his administration is determined at ensuring that erosion manace is erasicated while also appealing to benefiting communities to corporate with the newmap team for a smooth operation.
In his opening remark, the commissioner for Environment and Mineral resources, Dr Iniobong Essien noted that although the state government has intervened in many erosion situations, it was also necessary to partner with the World Bank for assistance as government alone cannot undertake those projects due to paucity of funds.
In his remark, the National Project Cordinator, Salisu Dahiru who also represented the Task Team Leader, Dr Amos Abu, commended the state government for the financial support noting Akwa Ibom is the only state so far benefiting from NEWMAP intervention. He appealed for prompt release of the 500 million naira Counterpart Funding for a speedy execution of the project as only 50 million naira has so far been released by the state.
Our senior correspondent Oto-Obong Billy reports that in their goodwill messages, the Clan head of offot, and a community representative, appreciated Governor Emmanuel and the NEWMAP team for coming to their rescue and prayed that the project be completed at the expected time, and also promised to corporate with the contractors.
