the menace of congestion in various categories of prisons in the country, which has been attributed to the undue delay in the dispensation of justice to prison inmates, have been described as worrisome and capable of defeating the purpose of establishing prisons in the Country.
Speaking with Planet news, Public Relations officer of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Akwa Ibom State Command, A.S.P Ogbajie Ogbajie who called for speedy dispensation of justice to inmates, commended the state Controller of Prisons, Pamela Nyong for working hard towards ensuring that prisons in the state are expanded, renovated and upgraded to enhance the human capital development capacity of prisons where cases of congestion exits.
According to Ogbajie, the Akwa Ibom State command is experiencing a relative congestion in prison especially at the Eket prison stressing that as soon as their cases are decided upon, it will help reduce the menace of congestion adding that they are charged with the responsibility of imparting moral values on the inmates for the realization of a crime-free society.
Our correspondent Oto-Obong Billy reports that recent Prison Reform Conference held in Abuja shows that not less than 45,000 inmates are languishing in various categories of prisons across the country, while about 30,000 of this figure are suspects awaiting trial.
