The Akwa Ibom State government has assured copyright owners of continued safeguarding of copyright laws in the state.
Deputy Governor, Moses Ekpo who gave the assurance at the interactive stakeholders’ meeting of Copyright Society of Nigeria – COSON held at Edet Akpan Avenue, Uyo, admonished all organisations to refrain from copyright infringements as culprits will face the full wrath of the law.
Also speaking, the Director General, Nigerian Copyright Commission – NCC, Afang Esekudeh, who was represented by Charles Amudipe, encouraged end users to pay for the music they play to avoid legal tussles, just as he reminded that payments made to creative minds otherwise referred to as “royalties” was essential if preserving talent and encouraging the creative industry was a salient goal in the country.
However, the Chairman, COSON, hinted that the reasons some musicians receive more royalties than others is simply because of the disparity in the use of their respective music. He encouraged creators to invest more time and energy in producing pieces that will be widely acclaimed, as this was the only way they could hugely breakthrough financially.
Okoroji also encouraged creative minds to register with COSON stating that it was the major route toward earning protection of their individual and collective inventions.
