Akwa Ibom state government begins clampdown on illegal gas plants and petrol stations in Uyo

Owners of petrol stations with Add-on skid Gas plants on the same facility in the state, who have not met required standards have been given an ultimatum to shut down the Gas Plants or risk being sanctioned.

This warning is in response to the attendant dangers and risks associated with having such facilities situated in residential areas especially where there are no approval for such facilities to be erected.

This led to an inspection and facility tour to some Add-on Skid Gas Plants in Uyo, by the Uyo Capital City Development Authority-UCCDA, led by its chairman, Prince Enobong Uwah where he stressed that the tour was necessary in order to effectively monitor the level of compliance of the people to the stipulated standards of operation.

According to him, it is their responsibility to ensure that the lives of the people are not endangered by the gas plant operators, adding that defaulters of the stipulated standard will be adequately sanctioned.

Our correspondent Jane Uwa reports that the move by the UCCDA is to ensure compliance to public safety rules stipulated by the relevant regulations before operations or risk being shut down.
