As the 2018 FIFA World Cup commences in Russia tomorrow, June 14, residents in Uyo have called on the Akwa Ibom State government to fix the giant television screen at the Ibom Plaza to provide a unified viewing centre for football fans to watch the games.
Speaking with Planet News, the residents who recalled the 2006 World Cup experience where the giant screen attracted football lovers from far and near, appealed to the government to fix the screen as it will promote unity and togetherness in the spirit of the tournament.
They reminded the state governor and other government officials of their promise to make the television functional before the world cup.
While thanking the governor for repositioning the Ibom Plaza by boasting the economic activities around the area as well as other achievements recorded in his government, the residents added that if fixed, football fans in the state will remain grateful to the governor.
Russia takes on Saudi Arabia in the opening game of the football fiesta on Thursday, June 14 at the Luzhniki Stadium while Nigeria will play Croatia in Kaliningrad on Saturday.
