The Akwa Ibom state Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja has ordered fresh elections in 18 local government areas, out of the 31 local government areas of the state.
At the sitting to deliver judgment on the case today, the tribunal held that the All Progressives Congress- APC and its candidate, Umana Okon Umana, failed to show that card readers alone can be relied upon for accreditation throughout the state.
The tribunal however held that it was not satisfied that election held in all the polling units in the state, maintaining that the right to vote is constitutionally guaranteed; hence nobody should be disenfranchised.
Insisting that Udom Emmanuel of the Peoples’ Democratic Party- PDP remains Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the tribunal declared that all the experts’ evidence brought before it by the appellant, failed, as none of the experts were able to demonstrate how he came about his finding.
The tribunal therefore appreciated the parties and its counsels and has urged the appellants to explore further opportunities available to them even on appeal.
APC candidate, Umana Umana, had challenged the outcome of the March 28th general election in the state, holding that the process was marred by fraud and irregularities.
