The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has pledged its determination to introduce legislation that will enhance innovations and creativity among youths of the state in the area of science and technology with a view to strengthening the state’s economy.
The House Speaker, Onofiok Luke, who stated this while receiving youths specialized in technology and ICT at the Assembly complex said it was necessary to ensure what he calls ‘transfer of knowledge’ in the sector, adding that such development would help in creating jobs and boosting the economy.
Speaking earlier on behalf of the delegation, an ICT expert, Ubong Nsekpong while soliciting the state legislature’s backing, regretted that most technology-based contracts executed in the state were handled by experts brought outside the state, adding that it would be more productive to ensure indigenes of the state with the requisite knowledge and skills are in charge of such projects in the future.
Our House of Assembly correspondent, Anthony Esin reports that the technology entrepreneurs further appealed to the state government to set aside 20 percent of the state’s Ministry of Finance annual budget for technology startups development in the state.
