As the world marks the 2017 arthritis day with the theme “it is in your hands, take action”, patients, caregivers and health care workers have been encouraged to actively participate in the creation of awareness and proper treatment of people with musculo-skeletal diseases.
A rheumatologist, Doctor Akpabio Akpabio, who stated this when he spoke with PLANET NEWS said arthritis which is the inflammation of the joints represents over a hundred disease conditions that can affect the joints in different ways. Akpabio who listed the symptoms of arthritis to include pains in the different joints, stiffness and swelling of the joints, however noted that there are modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors of ostheo arthritis.
While enumerating the different forms of treatment ranging from tablets, creams, injections, weight loss, physiotherapy and lastly surgical treatment when other modalities must have been exhausted, our correspondent Jane Uwa reports that the rheumatologist advised people who are experiencing some of the symptoms to see a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.
World Arthritis day marked yearly on October 12, is to raise awareness on rheumatic and musculo-skeletal diseases and the importance of early diagnosis and timely access to evidence-based treatment.
