As the World marks 2017 World Forestry Day with the theme ‘Forest and Energy’, government at all levels have been urged to make policies that are vital to the survival of forest as a key component of man’s existence.

Speaking with our correspondent,  a Nigerian forestry and wildlife lecturer, Dr. Edem Eniang of the University of Uyo said the day is designed to raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests, and trees outside forests, for the benefit of current and future generations.

He called on government to make deliberate effort in developing and preserving forest, adding that tree planting if encouraged can help in reclaiming the earth washed away by erosion and also enriched the habitat.

Eniang while warning against cutting down of trees by individuals said forests is capable of generating revenue for the government and called on the Akwa Ibom State government to establish a forest reserve in the state.
