Food vendors of FG school feeding programme in Akwa Ibom State lament slash in payment

Food vendors in Akwa Ibom State engaged by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to anchor the School Feeding programme for Primary schools have alleged a brazen attempt to shortchange them of their entitlements by some highly placed middlemen in the state.

Speaking with planet news, the women decried that the bi-weekly allocation sent to them to use in sourcing for food items to feed the children has been grossly slashed by the coordinators, adding that the decision by the coordinators of the programme to force them to buy the food items from specific suppliers was totally unacceptable.

According to them, before now, the vendors had the leeway to source the items privately and pay directly from the funds.

While stating that the development was a sure way of derailing the programme and the laudable objectives of the Federal government, the people called on the government and other relevant authorities to wade in and investigate the matter.

Reports say under the programme, selected food vendors are expected to register at one centre where they would be engaged to provide a meal per day for about 150 pupils in primary one to primary three in a public school. Part of the mandate of the programme is to also give as many women as possible, a chance to earn a living.
