The city of Eket and Onna came alive yesterday as Governor Udom Emmanuel flagged-off massive construction of roads, urban renewal and beautification projects in both council areas.
Governor Emmanuel who dedicated the flag-off to God, declared that the massive rehabilitation, construction of roads and beautification is a right step to restore Eket Local Government to its lost glory, which he noted was the pivot of moral and religious awakening as the missionaries led by Rev. Samuel Bill first landed there.
The governor further stressed that, Eket was the hub of factories such as PZ and UAC among many others but all have fizzled out due to decay in the city, but assured that his administration will ignite a restoration of that glory and therefore charged the people to ensure they do not undermine the project adding that compensation will be paid for certified property affected in the development.
Also speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Works in the state, Ephraim Akparawa Inyang said the move is in keeping with the fulfillment of his Excellency’s campaign promise to sustain superior performance and provide critical infrastructure for the benefit of the people.
Inyang said the project will span the remodelling of the Offiong-Etuk market roundabout in Eket Local Government Area and the construction and remodelling of several other selected roads in the city, including strategic roundabouts and junctions for the first and second phase and solicited co-operation of the youths, stakeholders and people of Eket by not obstructing the remodelling project in Eket which he disclosed will be handled by Niger pet Structures Limited.
In their separate remarks, the Ata of Eket and Clan head of Idua, HRM, Chief Abia and the Chairman Transition Committee, Frank Archibong thanked the governor and assured him of the loyalty, support and gratitude of Eket people for the project.
