Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has said his commitment to the educational development of youths in the state is irrevocable as this would produce adequate manpower to boast the industrialization programme of his administration.
The Governor stated this at the Government House, Uyo during a courtesy call on him by the management of University of Uyo led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Comfort Ekpo.
Emmanuel acknowledged the contributions of the institution to the State development and its superintending role on other educational institutions which he observed has helped in maintaining standard.
He commended the institution for maintaining sound academic record with it array of academia in various fields of training and called on the management to expedite action towards the development of the Permanent Site of the university.
The State Chief Executive used the occasion to draw attention of the University Management to reported breaches of confidence between patients and staff of the University Teaching Hospital and urged the authorities to address the issue and save the Health facility from bad reputation, announcing plans to upgrade some hospitals so as to provide complimentary healthcare services for the people of the State.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor Professor Comfort Ekpo disclosed that the Institution has been mandated by the National Universities Commission to mentor some Tertiary Institutions in the State and said the University has identified with the government aspiration to build economically viable and socially stable State.
She listed problems confronting the University to include non-issuance of Certificate of Occupancy to the Institution and delineation of boundary to forestall encroachment, inadequate accommodation for
hostels, classroom blocks in the faculty of Engineering, and fencing of the permanent site of the Institution and appealed for government intervention in the problems mentioned.
The Vice-Chancellor congratulated the Governor on his success at the polls and thanked him for the choice of some staff of institution in his cabinet and pledged the readiness of the management to partner the State to achieve its set goals.
