Legal expert commends President Buhari over disengagement of Abulrasheed Maina

A legal expert has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ordering the immediate disengagement from the civil service, the embattled former chairman of the presidential task force on pensions reforms Abulrasheed Maina, saying the directive demonstrates Buhari’s commitment in the fight against corruption.

Barrister Imoh Akpan who made his position known when he spoke with planet news noted that Maina’s reinstatement had questioned the integrity of the present administration in its stands against corruption, he however urged Nigerians to await the details of the investigation ordered by the president to unravel the circumstances that surrounded Maina’s recall.

While urging president Buhari to uncover if any protocol was breached in the reinstatement and subsequent promotion of the former presidential taskforce boss on pensions reforms, Barrister Akpan stressed that there should be no soft landing for those found culpable in the recall of Main

Our correspondent Jane Uwa reports that the legal luminary who called on Nigerians to stop engaging people who are alleged to have committed criminal offence in media trial, stressed that it is only a competent court of law that can pronounce an accused guilty or not, adding that Maina should be given the benefit of doubt until proven otherwise by the court.

Recall that Maina who was dismissed from service in 2013 and was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial crimes commission-EFCC over an alleged 2 billion Naira pension fraud, was reportedly reinstated and promoted to the position of director in charge of human resources in the ministry of interior on Friday October 20, an announcement that generated controversies in the polity, thereby leading to the subsequent call for his disengagement from service by the president.
