An illegal refinery has been destroyed in the creeks of Cartharwn Channel axis in Rivers State by the Nigerian Navy.
The men of the Nigerian Navy arrived at the jetty in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, on board gun boats of the Nigerian Navy Ship Pathfinder, on a routine operation against oil theft which, according to the Navy, had been intense in the last two months.
The base operations leader, Innocent Ejiofor, explained that the base usually carries out such operations regularly based on naval intelligence report, stressing the Navy’s commitment to ending the activities of the oil thieves in the region.
After setting the local refinery on fire, the naval officials returned to the jetty, where the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas, in company of senior naval officers addressed the officials, calling for proper prosecution of oil thieves and warned that any officer caught aiding and abetting crude oil theft would not be spared.
About 78 illegal refineries and over 900,000 litres of stolen crude have been destroyed by the Navy in the last two months.
