As the world marks the 2018 Hypertension day today with the theme “Know Your Numbers”, People have been urged to monitor their blood pressure regularly, maintain a healthy weight, eat a balanced diet and avoid sedentary lifestyle in order to avert exposing one’s self to the silent killer disease, otherwise known as Hypertension.
A senior registrar in the department of Cardiology, University of Uyo teaching hospital, Doctor Bassey Effiong who gave the advice when he spoke with planet new said Hypertension which is the persistent elevation of the blood pressure above an upper value of 140 or more and a lower value of 90 and above is usually classified into primary and secondary causes.
While stating that there are no early symptoms of hypertension until complication occurs, the medical practitioner stressed that the silent killer disease can only be treated and managed by taking medications that will lower the blood pressure.
Our correspondent Jane Uwa reports that Doctor Effiong advised the people to basically inculcate the habit of regular blood pressure checkups and also urged the hypertensive patients to consistently take their medications in order to ensure a healthy living.
World Hypertension day, celebrated annually on May 17, is a day set aside to educate the public and increase awareness of hypertension, which is also commonly known as high blood pressure.
