Police have confirmed the attack by militants at T-junction in Itu Local Government Area of the state.
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Cordelia Nwawe who confirmed the attack but denied the reported casualty figure assured that the command has already mapped out strategies to curtail future attacks.
She said the force has also reached out to other states commands to block their waterways against militants’ infiltration into Akwa Ibom.
A resident of the area, Moses Phillips who had earlier spoken to newsmen said the suspected militants killed two middle aged women and injured many others at the market during the attack.
He said the militants, dressed in military camouflage, emerged from the river on two speed boats loaded with machine guns and other ammunition around 8 a.m on Saturday. Policemen and soldiers according to him arrived the scene after the bandits had left.
