Residents in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State have bared their minds on the 2017 World Food Day observed world over today, October 16, calling for a concerted efforts of all individuals, government and non-governmental organizations towards realizing food sufficiency through enhanced production.
The respondents who spoke with our correspondent Anthony Esin said it behooves on every individual and families to cater for their food need through agricultural production, while government should constantly assist rural farmers with micro credit facilities.
In line with the tone for the 2017 commemoration, the people spoke on the need for rural dwellers to redouble effort in farming to ensure there is food sufficiency at the rural level and thereby reduce rural urban drift.
Every October 16 marks World Food Day which is celebrated every year in recognition of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.
This year’s theme – Change the Future of Migration, Invest in Food Security and Rural Development – highlights the challenges brought about in a world where more and more people are on the move, seeking economic stability and better circumstances of living.
