World number one Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in four dramatic sets to win his second US Open and 10th Grand Slam title.
The Serb won 6-4 5-7- 6-4 6-4 at Flushing Meadows, New York to end the year with three of the Four Majors.
Second seeded Federer had been hoping for his 18th Major title and first in three years but Djokovic successfully defended 19 of 23 break points and kept his nerve in front of a Pro-Federer crowd after rain delayed the serve off for more than three hours.
Earlier, Flavia Pennetta beat Roberta Vinci 7-6 7-4 6-2 in the all Italian US Open final to win the female title, and her first Grand Slam before announcing retirement.
