The Controller-General of the Nigeria Prisons Service-NPS, Ja’Afaru Ahmed has attributed incessant jail-breaks in the country to inadequate Prison staff and decayed infrastructure facilities within the Prisons formation.
Speaking on the condition of Prisons across Nigeria, Ahmed who said security is not a cheap venture stressed that to ensure that maximum security is provided at the reformation centres, steps must be taken in terms of man-power and provision of standard infrastructure.
He said the Prisons service under his watch was working towards expansion and relocation from urban centres to address the issue of over-crowding.
Ahmed said though lack of funds was working against the development of prisons, he added that the welfare of the prisoners remain paramount as most of them have been trained formally and informally to prepare them for life after their jail term.
With over 70,000 inmates across the country, the Prisons Boss said his administration has repositioned the 17 Prison farm centres in the country in order for the Prisons to feed itself and lessen the burden on the government especially with the present economic situation.
