Justice Okon Okon of Akwa Ibom State High Court 8 yesterday delivered judgment on the lingered case of brutal assassination of a former Deputy Speaker in Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Okon Uwah, acquitting the four arraigned suspects of the major count charge of murder while convicting them of the second count charge of conspiracy with attendant penalty of seven years imprisonment pronounced on them.
Trial of the accused persons Effiom Abai, Simeon Daniel Udo-ikpe, Godwin Moses Udo and Akan-inyene Benson Brown started since 2015 at a High Court based in Ukanafun before it was later transferred to Uyo Division.
The judge while delivering the judgment maintained that the prosecution counsel was unable to convincingly prove the case of murder brought against the accused persons, while noting that the court would not consider speculations and sentiments in deciding the case.
The Late Uwah who was the All Progressive Congress –APC candidate for Ukanafun State Constituency election in the 2015 general elections was killed in broad day light on March 18, 2015, at a village called Nkek in Ukanafun Local Government Area while embarking on house-to-house campaign along with other allies of his party.
The accused persons were slammed with three count-charges of conspiracy, murder and inflicting of grievous body harm. The judge equally discharged and acquitted them of the third charge for lack of substantial evidence.
Our correspondent, Anthony Esin reports that the accused persons were represented in court by former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of the state, Ekpenyong Ntekim while Friday Itim was the prosecution lawyer representing the state.
